  • Warning messages, prior repairs, and service history

Damage after a collision does not, by itself, explain when or why a component failed. Maintenance history can be relevant, but a missed service appointment does not automatically resolve fault. The particular condition, timing, and evidence linking it to the incident require individual review.

Check recalls without drawing conclusions

Use the NHTSA vehicle and equipment recall search to look for official safety information. A VIN search has limits: it may not show repaired recalls, some newly announced recalls, or certain older recalls. No open recall result is not a guarantee that a vehicle is safe.

A recall does not itself establish that a defect caused your injury. Follow the manufacturer's safety instructions and speak with an appropriate repair professional about a potentially unsafe vehicle. Do not drive or test it to recreate a suspected failure.

Keep the VIN, component details, service invoices, recall notices, photographs, and towing or storage information you already have. Identify where the vehicle and any removed parts are located. Ask about preservation before disposal or destructive testing; do not delay urgent medical care or disregard official safety instructions.
