Distracted Driving: The National Picture

In its April 2026 report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) records 3,208 deaths and an estimated 315,167 people injured in U.S. crashes involving distracted drivers during 2024. These are national figures, not Pennsylvania or New Jersey totals. Read NHTSA’s Distracted Driving in 2024 report (PDF).

Edelstein Law reviews distracted-driving injury claims throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. When you or a loved one is injured in a collision involving a distracted driver, the review may consider the driver’s conduct, the available evidence, medical expenses, lost income, and other documented losses.

Examples of Distracted Driving

Distraction is not limited to texting. Adjusting navigation or entertainment controls, eating or drinking, grooming, and conversations with passengers can also divert attention from driving. NHTSA’s distracted-driving guidance explains why activities that compete for a driver’s attention increase crash risk.

Texting can take a driver’s eyes from the road, hands from the wheel, and attention from driving. A case review should examine what the driver was doing and how that conduct may have contributed to the collision. Distraction does not, by itself, answer every question about fault or compensation.

How Edelstein Law Reviews Distracted-Driving Claims

Suppose you or a loved one has been injured or killed in a motor vehicle accident, including a car accident, bicycle accident, truck accident, motorcycle accident, or pedestrian accident involving a distracted driver. In that case, you may have the right to compensation for your losses. Medical costs, prescriptions, physical therapy, surgeries, and lost wages are just some of the financial hardships that victims can endure as a result of an auto accident caused by distracted driving.

Edelstein Law can evaluate the available records and explain the next questions in your injury claim. A useful starting point includes the collision date and location, report number, witness information, photographs or video you lawfully possess, and a factual treatment timeline. Do not access another person’s phone or accounts to gather evidence.
